Malawi and Japan last Saturday signed a K4.02 billion (about $10m) grant agreement for the construction of Lilongwe Teachers Training College.

The function took place on the sidelines of Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad) in Yokohama, Japan.

In her remarks during the signing ceremony, Malawi President Joyce Banda said it was gratifying to see the Japanese government assisting Malawi in the secondary school subsector.

She thanked the government and people of Japan for their continued support to Malawi, saying Japan is a genuine friend.

Minister of Economic Planning and Development Ralph Jooma said the ceremony followed the signing of Exchange of Notes between the Malawi Government and the Japanese government in Lilongwe in May this year.

Through the agreement, Japan will provide a grant of 1.118 billion Japanese yen (approximately MK4.02bn) towards the construction of the college.

According to Japanese aid procedures, once the Exchange of Notes has been signed between two governments, a grant agreement has to be signed to operationalise the project.
